At the start of an imaging run I will usually use a bright star, such as Vega seen here, to focus the camera and 'sync' the telescope to that part of the sky, and to check autoguider calibration. I really like the aesthetics of a single bright star against a supporting backdrop of fainter ones, and often turn these test frames into an image that I can use and display.
